A [2020·原创]

Hot pot(火锅) is one of traditional Chinese meals. This traditional meal has a history of more than 1,000 years. As the winter months come, so does the hot pot season. And what has made it a Chinese favorite food?

Well, it seems that the answer is not just found in the dish itself.

Hot pot isn't just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it's also a social experience. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding food to the hot pot. Hot pot is eaten over two to three hours. For this reason, it is often considered as an evening's entertainment, and time to spend with friends and family. However, most Westerners can't stand the idea of other people putting chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we have our own individual portions(份额), although the experience is still a social one.

But having given hot pot a go, lots of Westerners find it's now one of their favorite meals in Beijing. The steam(水蒸气) from the pot leaves the smelling of food on their clothes when they get home, but perhaps it is also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, just grab()some chopsticks, join some good friends, and dig in. For them, it's like throwing a dinner party where the taste buds(味蕾) and the hunger are satisfied in the warm company of friends. So we can enjoy the meal more than its taste.

B [2019·唐山丰润区一模]

In many areas of the world, taking a deep breath of air can be unhealthy and dangerous. The WHO estimates(估计) that air pollution is responsible(有责任的) for about 6.5 million premature births(早产) every year. It estimates that nearly 60,000 of those who die are children under the age of five. Most of these deaths, WHO officials say, happen in developing countries.

With all this pollution in the air, many people try to reduce their exposure(暴露)to protect themselves. So some people use face masks. You may have seen pictures of people wearing such masks in big cities like Beijing and Tokyo.

But do these face masks work? One expert says that some work much better than others.

Richard Peltier is a professor at the University of Massachusetts. He studies the effects of exposure to air pollution. Peltier and other air pollution and health experts agree on one important thing: no matter how much you pay for a mask, it only works if it fits snugly(紧贴地) on your face. But if they are made of cloth, being too tight is not good, either. During his study, Peltier found that if a person pulled a cloth mask too tightly, it would lose the ability to filter(过滤) anything.

Many people think that wearing any type of face mask is better than wearing nothing at all. Wearing a face mask—an inexpensive, non-working face mask made of cloth—does give a false sense of security that you're being protected while in fact you're not. You feel that you're doing something good for your body to protect yourself from air pollution. But in fact it's not doing anything at all or it's doing very little.
