 短文填空() 失落的帝国+对睡眠的研究

A [2020·原创]

  What lies under the sea? Is it possible that there's a whole underwater island with homes and places? Some people believe there used to be one—Atlantis.

Atlantis is believed to be an island that appeared over 11,000 years ago in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Greek mythology(希腊神话), the island got its name from the god() Atlantis, who owned the island. On the island, people lived wealthy lives. They built large houses with gold. The islanders used special stones to get energy from the sun, the moon and stars to produce power. They had developed brains and could communicate with animals.

The story of Atlantis was first told by Greek philosopher(哲学家) Plato as proof(证据) of his ideas about social values. According to him, the people on Atlantis became so greedy that the gods got mad at them. Then, the gods created great fires and earthquakes that caused Atlantis to sink(沉没) into the sea.

There are no other historical records of Atlantis. However, some people believe the story is true. Some researchers and explorers have even tried to find proof. They have found underwater tools of ancient cities around the Atlantic Ocean. They say these tools look just like what Plato described.

Just a month ago, high-tech search company Merlin Burrows said it had found proof of Atlantis. Whether these findings are true or not, one thing is for sure: the mysterious island has continued to catch many people's attention. People love the story so much that they have made many movies, including the hot movie Aquaman(《海王》), about the lost island.

  If you've ever stayed up late and then gotten up early the next day, you know what it's like not to get enough sleep. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. In fact, scientists have long believed that sleep is like food—if we don't get enough of it, we might get sick or even die. But now they are starting to wonder just how much sleep we need.

Researchers at Imperial College London recently did a study on fruit flies(果蝇). They found that flies that slept for very short periods of time—about 72 minutes a day—still lived about as long as flies that slept for normal amounts of time, according to Live Science. One of the female flies slept for just 4 minutes each day on average. This has led the researchers to wonder if sleep is less necessary than we previously thought.

Humans are very different from fruit flies. According to the Sleep Foundation, sleep is when our bodies perform a lot of maintenance(维护), for example, repairing tissue(组织) and growing muscle. Sleeping allows our bodies to recover from the stress we experience each day.

But can we really die from not sleeping? No humans have died so far from staying awake for too long. The current(现在的) world record for sleeplessness is held by Randy Gardner from the US, who stayed awake for 11 days and 25 minutes in 1964. However, Gardner did experience serious side effects(副作用), such as hallucinations(幻觉), moodiness(忧郁) and memory loss.

Scientists have not yet found any animals that don't sleep at all. Even animals that only sleep for short periods are not completely sleepless. This suggests that a minimum(最小的) amount of sleep is essential(必不可少的), even in short-sleeping animals, according to German scientist Niels Rattenborg.
