A [2020·原创题]

Some Chinese cities’ names contain cardinal(基本的) directions, like Beijing (northern capital) and Nanjing(southern capital). Why aren’t there any cities called Dongjing(eastern capital) or Xijing(western capital)?

Actually, the cities of Dongjing and Xijing did exist in the past. In fact, several cities have had these names throughout Chinese history.

A couple of cities were called Xijing in ancient times. Among them, the most famous one is Xi’an. Today’s capital city of Shaanxi Province served as the country’s capital during 13 different dynasties. It was called Xijing during dynasties like the Western Han (202 BC—8 AD) and Tang(618—907). Other cities that have been named Xijing include Luoyang in Henan, Datong in Shanxi, Lingwu in Ningxia, Fengxiang in Shaanxi, and Linjiang in Jilin.

As for Dongjing, the city of Kaifeng was called Dongjing during the Song Dynasty. As the capital city at that time, Kaifeng(also known as Bianliang) had a population of over one million. It was one of the world’s biggest cities at the time.

In addition, some cities in other countries have been called Dongjing as well. Tokyo (Dongjing in Chinese) is the capital of Japan. It is said that the city got its name because it is located east of Kyoto(京都), Japan’s former capital. Dongjing and Dongdu are also old names for the city of Hanoi(河内) in Vietnam.

B [2020·原创题]

A woman was at an airport waiting for her flight to start boarding. She still had a lot of time, so she went to a shop and bought a book to read. While she was in the shop, she decided to buy a bag of cookies as well.

She arrived at her gate, sat down and started reading her book. She was so focused on her book that she didn’t notice what was going on around her. But she did see that a man had sat down next to her and taken one of her cookies out of the bag.

She pretended not to notice, as she didn’t want to make a scene. But then the man took more. He kept eating the cookies until there was just one left. The man took the last cookie and broke it in half. He tapped(轻拍) the woman on the shoulder and held out one half to her.

The woman could not believe how much nerve(放肆) this man had to steal all of her cookies and then offer half a cookie in return. She angrily grabbed(夺取) the half-cookie out of his hand and ate it.

Finally, it was time for her to board. But as she went to the gate, she realized that her bag of cookies was still in her purse. The man had been eating his own cookies the whole time and simply wanted to share the last one with her. The woman blushed(脸红). She sincerely wanted to apologize to the man for her rudeness.

When we’re not paying attention to the world around us, it can be easy to misunderstand what’s happening or even become angry with others. It is better to keep our eyes open and think about every possibility when trying to understand a particular(不寻常的) situation.

1.The woman bought a book and a bag of cookies before boarding. ( )
