There was an old woman called Mrs. Jones by her neighbors. She was in her eighties, but she still drove her old car like a young woman.
She loved driving at a really high speed, and took pride in the fact that she had never, never in her thirty-five years of driving, been punished 1 a driving offence(犯规,犯法).
Then one day she nearly 2 her record. A police car 3 her, and the policemen in it saw her pass a red light without stopping. Of course, she was stopped. It seemed 4 that she would be punished.
5 Mrs. Jones came up to the judge, he looked at her seriously and said that she was 6 old to drive a car, and that the reason why she had not stopped at the red 7 was most probably that her eyes had become 8 with old age, so that she had simply not seen it.
When the judge had finished what he was 9 , Mrs. Jones opened the big handbag she was bringing and took out her sewing. Without saying a word, she chose a needle with a very small eye, and 10 it at her first attempt.
When she had 11 done this, she took the thread out of the needle again and handed both the needle and the thread to the judge, saying, “Now it is your 12 . I suppose you drive a car, and that you are quite sure about your own eyesight.”
The judge took the 13 and tried to thread it. After half a dozen tries, he had still not succeeded. The case against Mrs. Jones was 14 , and her record 15 unbroken.

Passage 1
There's a common problem that exists in almost every family—how to monitor people living at home who are weak or elderly? It has been a great big trouble for decades. Until now, Johann Siau, a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Engineering and Technology, has been working on the university's InterHome project in order to create a home that could solve that hard problem.
The university's wider InterHome project is a development of a smart house, and the assisted living project is a part of it. In this part, the house is set to keep some useful patterns for its master and gradually adapt to one's style so that it can save energy as much as possible. Johann reported, “We've developed a wrist-band type of device(装置) which allows us to monitor the condition of an elderly person, or whoever is wearing the same device. It allows us to collect data of a person to see if the person has fallen or is away from where he is supposed to be. It connects an elderly person with the assisted living type of device with the InterHome.”
The InterHome carries a series of latest technologies, such as the broadband, the mobile data and communication, but the most important task is that the researchers must make sure all the technology works together. Since it is not just a prototype(样品) or a vehicle for research. It's a study tool to help students from different scientific backgrounds learn about and develop technology. It requires lots of skills from students—electronic engineers, computer students, design students etc. “The present plan we are working on is a smart home project in Watford with some commercial companies. We are looking at how a smarter home can provide extra value services,” said Johann.
