A 14-years-old girl named Natalie Doan, who is living just a few blocks from the beach, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. “It's so special to see the ocean and hear the wave from my house,” she says.
On a black night on October 29, 2012, Hurricane(飓风) Sandy suddenly came to this town and attacked the East Coast. The wave became much stronger than before and the ocean turned angry, which hit Rockaway heavily and made it be in ruins. Fortunately, Natalie's family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city's bridge fell into the river.
On the next day, when they returned to Rockaway after Sandy was gone, they found that many of Natalie's friends had lost their homes. People were suffering, especially the elderly. Her school was damaged so completely that she had to go to a new school in Brooklyn.
In the following few days, the men and women started rebuilding their houses in Rockaway. Volunteers came with cars loaded with donated clothing and toys. Neighbors devoted their spare time to helping people in need. Teenagers tried their best to deliver water and food to elderly people trapped in powerless high-rise buildings. “You can't control what happens to you, but you can always choose how you deal with it,” Natalie's mom said to her. Natalie was inspired deeply. Her choice was to help.
